I am unsure of what other people think, but every now and then I feel that I can become a prisoner of my own negative thoughts and beliefs. I forget that I have the freedom to choose to defeat my demons and fill my heart with love, joy, and compassion. We were all born to manifest the glory of the infinite source of all creation that is within all life. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other beings permission to do the same. As we become liberated from our own anger, fear and jealousy, our presence automatically liberates others and fills all our hearts with, love.
We often focus on negative thoughts and beliefs because it can be easier than learning to look for the positive in life. We are ceaselessly sold the idea that happiness derives from owning a big house full of junk that we really don’t need, new clothes we probably cannot afford, and an expensive vacation we don’t enjoy because we excessively work long hours to pay for a limited amount of time off from our profession. We look at Facebook and Instagram, and we compare our lives to the highlight reel of others. However, being a negative person and comparing ourselves to others doesn’t accomplish anything. We remain stuck and miserable, and life becomes a burden. Our lives are priceless, and a simple way to overcome negative thoughts and defeat our demons is through the selfless act of helping others in life. When I look back over the last ten years of my journey to become a yoga teacher and a health and life coach, I must admit, that I was happiest when I was actively engaged in helping others.
One essential component of spiritual practice is learning to serve others, and one of the greatest gifts a person receives from selfless services is discovering his or her true purpose. Whatever the motive, helping others improves a person's health, happiness, and in some cases, longevity. Regardless of the circumstance, serving others allows you to reap one important benefit: that undeniable sense of good you feel after you help make the world a better place for all beings. You may notice that you’re smiling after a good deed, and because you’ve received positive feedback, you’ll work to give more, and as a result, your will defeat your demons and have less negative thoughts. May all beings be happy and free, may all our thoughts words and actions contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom. Peace, Peace, Peace.
